When is a Baby Allowed to Fly on a Plane?

Tue, 9 Sep 2025

Dear PRAMITA friends who are new parents, you’ve probably wondered: “Is it safe to take a baby on a plane?” Especially if there’s a need to travel far and leaving the little one at home isn’t an option. The answer: yes, as long as the timing and preparation are right!

In general, healthy babies can fly with their parents. Some airlines even allow babies as young as two days old to board a flight. But many experts recommend waiting until the baby is at least 4–6 weeks old. Why? Because at that age, the baby’s immune system is more ready to face a new environment like an enclosed, crowded airplane cabin.

If the little one was born prematurely, it’s best to wait until the baby reaches the equivalent of their expected due date, plus another 1–2 weeks. This is important because premature babies are more sensitive to air pressure and infection risks.

What Needs to Be Prepared Before Flying?

Before taking a baby on a plane, make sure the baby is in good condition. Consult with a doctor first, and some airlines also require a health certificate. Don’t forget, airplane cabins have a closed air circulation system, so the risk of catching an illness from other passengers still exists.

Air pressure in the plane can also make a baby’s ears feel uncomfortable, or even painful. This often makes babies cranky. But don’t worry, PRAMITA friends can ease this by breastfeeding or giving a pacifier during take-off and landing.

Safe & Comfortable Tips for Flying with a Baby

Choose a flight schedule that matches the baby’s nap time, so the little one can rest more peacefully.

Dress the baby in comfortable and warm clothes, as the cabin tends to be cold.

Bring a special bag with all the essentials like diapers, spare clothes, tissues, and medicines.

Bring small toys or favorite books to keep the baby entertained during the flight.

If possible, book an extra seat for the baby and use a special safety belt.

So, flying with a baby isn’t something to be afraid of—as long as PRAMITA friends know how to prepare. Don’t forget to check with a doctor before flying with the little one.
