The Cause of Dizzme During Holiday Travel

Tue, 17 Mar 2026

Stuck in traffic during the Eid homecoming (Mudik)? Reaching for your phone to scroll through TikTok or watch a series seems like the perfect distraction. But suddenly, you are hit with a wave of nausea, dizziness, and cold sweats. Welcome to the world of Cybersickness, or digital motion sickness.

Cybersickness is nausea or discomfort triggered by viewing moving digital content on screens like smartphones or tablets. It is distinct from regular car sickness because the "motion" causing it is virtual, not physical.

Here is the science: your brain's balance system relies on signals from your eyes, inner ear (vestibular system), and body. When you scroll on your phone in a moving car, your eyes are locked on a screen, but your inner ear feels the bumps and turns of the road. This creates a sensory conflict—your eyes say "we are looking at something still/virtual," while your ears scream "we are moving!". This confusion tricks your brain into feeling sick.

Symptoms can linger for hours even after you put the phone down. Watch out for warning signs like stomach fullness, yawning, headache, or breaking into a cold sweat.

To survive the long drive home, try to limit your screen time. If you must use your phone, slow down your scrolling speed or switch to audiobooks. The best cure? Look out the window at the horizon. It helps recalibrate your senses and keeps that queasy feeling at bay.
