Recognize Preeclampsia, Be Alert to High Blood Pressure During Pregnancy
Wed, 26 Aug 2026Pregnancy is a period that requires close attention to both maternal health and fetal development. One condition that needs to be watched for is preeclampsia, especially when blood pressure increases during pregnancy.
Preeclampsia is a condition characterized by elevated blood pressure and may be accompanied by protein in the urine after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Early recognition is important because this condition can pose risks to both the mother and the baby.
Recognize the Symptoms of Preeclampsia
One sign to watch for is blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg. Other symptoms may include headache, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting, upper abdominal pain, and swelling of the feet, hands, and face.
These symptoms should not simply be considered normal changes during pregnancy, especially if they appear suddenly or become more severe.
Who Is at Higher Risk?
The risk of preeclampsia may be higher during a first pregnancy, in mothers with chronic hypertension or obesity, and in pregnancies occurring under the age of 20 or over the age of 35.
A history of preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy or a family history of preeclampsia should also be taken into consideration. Other conditions, such as kidney disorders and autoimmune diseases, are also mentioned as risk factors.
Why Should Preeclampsia Be Taken Seriously?
In mothers, preeclampsia can cause impaired liver and kidney function. If the condition becomes more severe, it may develop into eclampsia, which is characterized by seizures, and may also increase the risk of bleeding and other serious complications.
In babies, preeclampsia may be associated with restricted fetal growth, premature birth, low birth weight, and even the risk of fetal death in the womb.
Therefore, regular prenatal check-ups are an important step in monitoring blood pressure and overall health throughout pregnancy.
Seek medical attention immediately if high blood pressure, severe headache, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting, or upper abdominal pain occurs.
PRAMITA Friends, early detection of preeclampsia is an important part of achieving a safer pregnancy.
Healthy mother, safe baby.
