Plant-Based vs. Cow’s Milk: Is It Always Healthier?

Tue, 27 Oct 2026

Hello #sahabatpramita. Driven by modern lifestyle trends and environmental awareness, many families are transitioning from traditional cow’s milk to plant-based alternatives such as oat, almond, or soy milk. While plant-based drinks offer various dietary benefits, replacing cow's milk entirely raises an essential nutritional question: is it truly healthier in every aspect?

A national dietary research study evaluated the impact of consuming milk alternatives compared to cow’s milk across a population spectrum ranging from young children aged 1.5 years to adults. The findings highlight a critical nutritional gap that often goes unnoticed by parents and health-conscious consumers.

In many diets, cow's milk serves as a primary source of essential dietary iodine. Conversely, plant-based milk alternatives naturally contain very low concentrations of iodine unless specifically fortified by manufacturers.

The study revealed that individuals who consumed plant-based milk exclusively had a significantly lower daily iodine intake (94 µg/day) compared to those who drank cow's milk (129 µg/day). Furthermore, the median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) among exclusive plant-based milk consumers was 79 µg/L. According to World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, a median UIC below 100 µg/L indicates iodine deficiency, whereas cow’s milk consumers maintained sufficient levels at 132 µg/L.

Iodine is a vital micronutrient necessary for thyroid hormone production, which plays a central role in neurological and cognitive development in growing children. For families choosing plant-based diets, the key takeaway is not to avoid alternative milks, but to carefully check product labels for iodine fortification or ensure adequate iodine intake from other dietary sources alongside #sahabatpramita.
