Myth or Fact: Does Drinking Ice During Menstruation Cause Cysts?

Dear PRAMITA friends, many people still believe that drinking ice water during menstruation can cause cysts. Some say that cold water can cause menstrual blood to clot or stay in the uterus, eventually triggering cyst growth in the ovaries. But is that true? Let’s explore the medical facts!

The answer: It’s just a myth.
To this day, there is no scientific evidence that drinking ice water can cause ovarian cysts. Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form due to hormonal changes, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or conditions like endometriosis. Drinking ice has nothing to do with those conditions.

Ice water also doesn’t cause menstrual blood to "freeze" in the uterus. Menstruation is a natural process of the uterine lining shedding, and the temperature of what is consumed—cold or warm—does not affect that process.

In fact, drinking water during menstruation is highly recommended.
Especially if the weather is hot or after physical activity. Drinking water helps prevent dehydration, reduces fatigue, and may relieve cramps. Cold water can also help maintain body temperature after light exercise.

If PRAMITA friends don’t like plain water, high-water fruits like watermelon, oranges, or cucumbers are good options. Also, increase the intake of vegetables, nutritious protein such as fish or chicken, and get enough rest to stay strong during the menstrual cycle.

In conclusion, the belief that drinking ice during menstruation causes cysts is a myth that should no longer be trusted. Rather than worrying over unfounded claims, focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and staying well-hydrated during menstruation.
