The Myopia Boom: Why Gen Z Is Losing Their 20/20 Vision Faster Than Ever

Brief Content (Body Text): Have you noticed that almost everyone in our circle wears glasses or contacts these days? It is not just a fashion statement. We are in the middle of a Myopia Boom.

Decades ago, nearsightedness (myopia) was relatively rare. Today, up to 90% of teenagers in some parts of the world are nearsighted. Scientists estimate that by the end of this decade, one-third of the global population will be affected.

Is It Just Genetics? Nope. While having nearsighted parents plays a role, genetics change too slowly to explain this sudden surge. The real culprit is our lifestyle.

Research suggests the main driver isn't just reading or screen time—it is a lack of outdoor time. Our eyes need natural light to regulate growth. When we spend all day indoors glued to screens or books, our eyeballs actually elongate, causing images to focus in front of the retina instead of on it. That is what makes things blurry.

Why Should You Care? High myopia is not just about thick glasses. It increases the risk of serious eye issues later in life, like retinal detachment, glaucoma, and early cataracts.

The Fix You cannot naturally reverse myopia once you have it, but you can slow it down:

  • Go Outside: Natural light is key. Swap some screen time for outdoor activities.
  • Take Breaks: Follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Get Checked: Regular eye exams are non-negotiable.

Your eyes are your most valuable asset. Give them a break from the digital world once in a while.
