Miyth or Fact : Varises and High Heels

Tue, 24 Jun 2025

Do High Heels Really Cause Varicose Veins? Here’s the Fact!
Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic issue—they're a vascular disorder where weakened vein valves disrupt blood flow from the legs back to the heart. This results in bulging, twisted veins on the skin’s surface.

High heels are often blamed, especially among women. But are they truly the main cause?

In fact, varicose veins are triggered by multiple factors:

  • Genetics
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Prolonged standing/sitting
  • Hormonal changes

High heels can worsen blood return due to constant calf muscle contraction, but they're not the sole culprit.

Symptoms include:

  • Leg heaviness and soreness
  • Tingling or burning
  • Blue, bulging veins
  • Discomfort when standing long
  • Varicose veins can appear not only in the legs, but also in the esophagus or pelvic region.

Treatment options:

  • Avoid prolonged standing/sitting
  • Wear compression stockings
  • Take flavonoid-based medication
  • Undergo laser, radiofrequency, or surgery

Start early prevention: walk regularly, maintain healthy weight, and monitor symptoms early with a vascular ultrasound.
