IGRA: An Advanced Test for More Accurate Tuberculosis Detection
Sat, 14 Jun 2025Dear Sahabat PRAMITA,
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health concern requiring serious attention. Not only those with symptoms, but latent TB infection (LTBI) also poses a challenge because it shows no physical signs yet can progress into active TB. One of the modern methods to detect it is the Interferon Gamma Release Assays (IGRA) test.
IGRA works by measuring the immune system's response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the blood. When someone is infected, specific T cells in the body release interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in response to TB antigens. IGRA measures the level of IFN-γ to assess the likelihood of both latent and active TB infection.
Advantages of IGRA Compared to the Skin Test (TST):
More objective and precise results — analyzed via software, not visual reading like TST
Not influenced by BCG vaccination — suitable for those who have been vaccinated
Requires only one visit — no need to return like TST
Does not trigger false-positive reactions when repeated
Results are known faster
Technical Information:
Sample: 3 mL whole blood
No fasting required unless combined with other tests
Conducted in a standardized laboratory with results classified as:
Positive: indicates possible TB infection
Negative: no infection
Indeterminate: results inconclusive
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA) recommends IGRA for nearly all conditions where TST is normally used, except for children under 5 years old.
IGRA is ideal for Sahabat PRAMITA who work in healthcare, have received the BCG vaccine, or cannot return for TST result reading.
Through this technology, PRAMITA is committed to providing accurate, efficient, and comfortable TB screening solutions.
