HIV Testing
Thu, 5 Dec 2024HIV infection can attack the immune system and progress to AIDS if left untreated. AIDS causes various infectious diseases and metabolic disorders. Many people with HIV are unaware of their infection for years. HIV is transmitted through sexual contact, sharing needles, and from mother to child.
HIV diagnosis is established through serology and virology tests. Serology tests are used to screen for HIV infection. These tests detect HIV antibodies and antigens. Rapid tests and ECLIA are common serology methods.
Virology tests detect HIV DNA and RNA using PCR. These tests also measure viral load, which indicates the amount of HIV in a person's body.
To prepare for an HIV test, individuals can consult with a doctor to get information about the procedure. The doctor will then provide informed consent for a blood draw. The results will be explained by the doctor who recommended the test.
A positive HIV diagnosis is confirmed by three reactive serology results or a virology test. HIV-positive patients can immediately start antiretroviral therapy (ART), while HIV-negative individuals are advised to undergo follow-up testing if they are at risk.
We encourage you to get tested and consult with a doctor at your nearest Pramita Laboratory.
