Heart Disease: Is It Hereditary?
Sat, 14 Jun 2025Dear Sahabat PRAMITA,
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, including in Indonesia. In addition to lifestyle, genetics also plays a significant role. Is it true that heart disease can be inherited?
Yes, it can.
A person with a family history of heart disease has a higher risk of developing similar conditions. This is due to genetic mutations passed down from one or both parents. These inherited risks are often exacerbated by poor lifestyle and environment, such as high-fat diets, lack of exercise, and chronic stress.
Types of Hereditary Heart Diseases
Some of the most common include:
Cardiomyopathy – abnormalities in heart muscles, including hypertrophic and dilated types.
Arrhythmia – irregular heart rhythms due to electrical system issues. Includes Brugada syndrome, long QT syndrome, and familial atrial fibrillation.
Marfan Syndrome – affects connective tissue, including the aorta.
Familial Hypercholesterolemia – genetically high LDL cholesterol levels, increasing early heart attack risk.
Early Detection with Genetic Testing
Tests such as EKG, echocardiogram, blood tests, and genetic screening are highly recommended for individuals with family history.
Early screening enables proactive care and prevention.
