Get to Know the ANA Test, ANA Profile, and Anti-dsDNA for Early Lupus Detection
Mon, 25 Aug 2025Lupus is one of the autoimmune diseases in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own organs. The symptoms can vary widely, ranging from prolonged fatigue, joint pain, fever, and rashes to organ-related issues such as problems with the kidneys or lungs. To help detect lupus early, several tests can be performed, namely the ANA Test, ANA Profile, and Anti-dsDNA.
1. ANA Test: The First Step in Detecting Lupus
The ANA (Antinuclear Antibody) Test is a screening test to detect autoimmune diseases—conditions where antibodies attack healthy cells. A positive result indicates the presence of autoimmunity. There are over 80 types of autoimmune diseases, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Sjögren's Syndrome, Psoriatic Arthritis, and the most well-known one: Lupus.
2. Next Step: ANA Profile for More Specific Testing
If the ANA Test result is positive, the next recommended test is the ANA Profile. This test identifies more specific types of antibodies related to various autoimmune diseases, including lupus, scleroderma, or Sjögren's syndrome. This helps doctors to better determine the specific type of autoimmune disease.
3. Anti-dsDNA: A Key Indicator of Systemic Lupus
If the ANA Profile also suggests lupus, the Anti-dsDNA test is usually advised. This test is crucial because this particular antibody only appears in certain cases of lupus, especially when it affects internal organs. It is also used to monitor how well treatment is working.
4. Test Preparation: Simple and Hassle-Free
Sahabat PRAMITA (PRAMITA friends) do not need to fast before taking these tests. Just come to the lab as scheduled and inform the staff if you're currently taking any medications, so the results can be as accurate as possible. All tests are performed through a blood sample taken from the arm.
With early detection and routine monitoring through the ANA Test, ANA Profile, and Anti-dsDNA, lupus can be managed more effectively. Don’t hesitate to consult a doctor and get tested if you notice any suspicious symptoms.
