Fasting Doesn’t Slow Down Your Brain!

Tue, 18 Mar 2025

The holy month of Ramadan is often associated with fatigue and reduced focus. Sahabat Pramita might have heard people saying that fasting makes the brain sluggish. But guess what? That’s just a myth! In fact, Ramadan fasting can sharpen cognitive function, as long as it’s paired with the right habits, including a well-balanced suhoor.

Ramadan Fasting and Cognitive Abilities
Research has proven that fasting during Ramadan does not necessarily impair cognitive function. A study conducted in Libya by Amira Miladi, M. A. Saafi, and I. Latiri (2024) on 24 children aged 11-15 years found that fasting had no impact on information processing speed, decision-making, or auditory attention (Miladi et al., 2024).

Meanwhile, a study in Morocco by H. Rachid, K. Charaf, Samy Hosbane, and M. Agoub (2020) on 41 medical students found that despite changes in eating and sleeping patterns, there was no significant effect on cognitive function (Rachid et al., 2020).

Another study conducted by A. Mertens, Schouteden Martijn, and L. Godderis (2015) in Belgium showed that although sleepiness increased during Ramadan, concentration and focus remained stable (Mertens et al., 2015).

Suhoor as the Key to Staying Focused While Fasting
One crucial factor in maintaining cognitive function while fasting is suhoor! Skipping suhoor can lead to an earlier drop in energy, negatively affecting focus and concentration.

  1. Eat a nutritious suhoor: A balanced mix of protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber, and healthy fats helps maintain energy levels throughout the day.
  2. Stay hydrated: Dehydration can impact cognitive abilities, so drinking enough water during suhoor is essential.
  3. Avoid high-sugar foods: Sugar provides quick energy but causes rapid crashes, leading to fatigue.
  4. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can make the brain feel sluggish and reduce concentration.

Conclusion
Fasting during Ramadan doesn’t slow down cognitive function! With a nutritious suhoor and a proper sleep schedule, the brain remains sharp and active. So, don’t skip suhoor, Sahabat Pramita! Stay productive and focused throughout Ramadan.
