Dry Season and Health Risks: Recognize the Symptoms and Appropriate Tests

The dry season does more than change the weather. Higher temperatures may increase fluid loss through sweating, making dehydration more likely when fluid intake is insufficient. Common symptoms include thirst, dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness, darker urine, and reduced urination.

Dust and environmental irritants may also trigger or worsen respiratory and allergic symptoms in some individuals. Persistent cough, runny nose, shortness of breath, fever, or prolonged productive cough should therefore not be overlooked.

Laboratory Tests Can Support Clinical Evaluation

Following a medical history and physical examination, a doctor may recommend laboratory tests according to the patient's symptoms and risk factors.

A complete blood count provides information about red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, and other blood parameters. It can support the evaluation of infections, blood disorders, and other medical conditions.

C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) may help detect the presence of inflammation. However, neither test can identify a specific disease or cause of inflammation on its own. Results must therefore be interpreted together with clinical findings and other investigations.

Procalcitonin may also be considered in selected patients with suspected infection. Elevated levels can be associated with serious bacterial infections, but procalcitonin should not be regarded as a stand-alone test for distinguishing bacterial from viral infections. Clinical assessment remains essential.

For persistent productive cough or certain suspected lower respiratory infections, sputum examination and culture may also be considered according to the doctor's clinical assessment.

Dengue Can Still Occur During the Dry Season

Dengue should not be associated exclusively with the rainy season. Indonesia's Ministry of Health has emphasized that dengue can also occur during the dry season when standing water or water-storage containers provide breeding sites for Aedes mosquitoes.

When dengue is suspected, the appropriate laboratory test depends partly on the stage of illness. The World Health Organization notes that NS1 antigen testing can support early diagnosis, while antibody testing such as IgM has a role according to the timing of illness and clinical circumstances.

Fever following travel to or residence in a malaria-endemic area also requires careful assessment. A recent travel history is important, and suspected malaria should be confirmed through appropriate laboratory testing.

Evaluating Dehydration, Allergy, and Eye Infection

When dehydration or fluid imbalance is suspected, doctors may consider tests such as serum electrolytes, kidney function tests including creatinine, blood glucose, and urine analysis depending on the patient's condition. These investigations can provide information about fluid and electrolyte balance and kidney function.

For suspected allergies or allergic asthma, eosinophil counts, total IgE, and allergen-specific IgE may be considered as part of the evaluation. Allergy test results, however, must be interpreted together with the patient's symptoms and exposure history because a positive test does not automatically confirm clinically significant allergy.

Most cases of conjunctivitis do not require routine culture. In severe, recurrent, chronic, or treatment-resistant cases, an eye discharge culture may be considered to help identify the cause and guide treatment.

Early Evaluation Supports Appropriate Care

Laboratory testing is one part of the diagnostic process. The type of examination should always be determined according to symptoms, physical examination findings, travel history, individual risk factors, and the doctor's clinical judgment.

Seek prompt medical attention if symptoms become severe, particularly persistent high fever, difficulty breathing, severe dehydration, significantly reduced urination, altered consciousness, severe eye pain, or reduced vision.
