Constipation During Fasting: Why It Happens to Kids and How to Fix It

Watching your child learn to fast during Ramadan is a proud moment for any parent. However, this milestone often comes with a common hurdle: constipation. If your child becomes cranky or complains of a full stomach, they might be dealing with digestive issues, not just hunger.

Constipation happens when bowel movements become infrequent or painful. During Ramadan, the drastic change in eating and sleeping schedules is the main culprit. The most obvious cause is dehydration. Since stool is 75 percent water, a lack of fluid intake during Suhoor and Iftar forces the body to absorb moisture from waste, resulting in hard stool.

Dietary choices also play a huge role. Kids often crave fried foods or sweets to break their fast, neglecting essential fiber from fruits and vegetables. Additionally, the "sedentary mode" kicks in; children tend to move less when fasting to conserve energy, but physical activity is actually crucial for stimulating bowel movements.

To keep their digestive system running smoothly, ensure children over five drink at least 1,500 ml of fluids daily, split between non-fasting hours. Hydration can come from water, soups, or juicy fruits. Prioritize fiber-rich greens in their meals to soften the stool. Finally, encourage light physical activity before Iftar to keep the gut moving. A healthy gut ensures a happier fasting experience for the little ones.
