Can Dental Caries Affect Academic Performance?

Tue, 26 May 2026

Do you often underestimate cavities in children? It is time to change that mindset. Oral health issues have a much bigger impact than just a simple, temporary toothache.

For millions of children, poor oral health means enduring persistent pain, dental abscesses, inability to chew properly, and severe embarrassment over damaged teeth. The  acute pain caused by tooth decay strongly affects children and is often equal to the impact of asthma. Psychologically, children dealing with oral health problems are more  likely to feel inferior, shy, sad, or depressed. They are also less likely to be friendly compared to those with healthy teeth.

The impact at school is highly visible and damaging. Children are often unable to verbalize their dental pain. Teachers might only notice a child having trouble paying  attention or showing signs of anxiety, fatigue, and withdrawal from daily activities. Oral diseases can cause decreased appetite and distractibility, leading to lower self-  esteem and potential school failure. Children with oral health issues are less likely to complete their homework and tend to struggle academically. In fact, students  suffering from toothaches are almost four times as likely to have a lower grade point average.

Furthermore, worse oral health strongly correlates with poor school attendance. On average, these children miss almost one more school day per year than their peers.  Missing school due to dental pain directly and negatively affects their overall academic performance.

Oral health is a vital investment for a child's future. Regular dental check-ups are essential to ensure they can learn and thrive comfortably.
