Allergy or Flu? Know the Difference Before Mistaking One for the Other
Wed, 2 Sep 2026Repeated sneezing, a runny nose, or nasal congestion is often immediately associated with the flu. However, similar symptoms may also occur because of allergies. Although the two conditions can appear alike, their causes and management are different.
Flu is caused by a viral infection. In addition to nasal symptoms, it is commonly accompanied by fever, a sore throat, and body aches.
Allergies are different. They occur when the immune system reacts to a particular trigger. These triggers may include dust, cold air, food, animal dander, medications, and certain chemicals.
One characteristic that may help distinguish an allergy from the flu is the absence of fever. Allergies may also cause an itchy nose and eyes, along with repeated sneezing. Symptoms can persist for more than two weeks or return whenever a person is exposed to the allergen.
Why Should Allergies Not Be Ignored?
Recurring allergies without appropriate management may lead to ongoing inflammation. Depending on the condition, allergic reactions can be associated with complications such as chronic sinusitis, worsening asthma symptoms, and sleep disturbances. In some severe cases, exposure to an allergen may also trigger anaphylactic shock, a potentially life-threatening reaction.
This is why identifying allergy triggers as early as possible is important. Allergy diagnosis can help identify the trigger and determine appropriate management, particularly because allergy symptoms may resemble those of the flu. Laboratory testing can also help clarify the underlying cause.
Understanding the difference between flu and allergies is an important first step toward recognizing what your body is experiencing. The more aware you are of your body's signals, the easier it becomes to take appropriate steps to maintain your health and stay productive every day.
