30 and Not Ready For Kids Yet? Check Your AMH First!

Fri, 5 Jun 2026

The trend of delaying pregnancy into one's 30s has become increasingly common among today's generation. Various factors, including a focus on higher education, career advancement, economic stability, and mental readiness, prompt many women to postpone motherhood. While this is a perfectly valid personal choice, there is a crucial biological aspect that must not be ignored: the ovarian reserve.

As a woman ages, the quantity and quality of her eggs naturally decline. This decline accelerates significantly after the mid-30s. Unfortunately, a diminished ovarian reserve is often clinically asymptomatic, meaning it shows no outward physical signs. Many women only discover the issue when they encounter difficulties trying to conceive.
Therefore, if you plan to delay pregnancy, early screening of your ovarian reserve is highly recommended. Currently, the best and most accurate indicator for assessing the quantity of your functional ovarian reserve is the Serum AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) Test.

AMH is a hormone produced exclusively by the small, growing follicles (egg sacs) within the ovaries. Naturally, AMH levels peak at around 25 years of age. Following this peak, the levels gradually decline in tandem with the shrinking egg pool, eventually reaching undetectable levels when a woman enters menopause (typically around 50-51 years old).

The primary advantage of the Serum AMH Test over other fertility markers is its remarkable stability. AMH levels remain relatively constant and are not affected by hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle. This means you can take the blood test at any point during your cycle.

Knowing your AMH levels early on provides a significant advantage. If your levels indicate a healthy egg reserve, it offers peace of mind. Conversely, if the results show a diminished reserve (for instance, falling below the 10th percentile for your age group) , it allows you to proactively plan your next steps. These steps might include trying for a natural conception sooner rather than later, or exploring options like egg freezing (oocyte vitrification) for future use. Do not leave your fertility to chance; start by checking your AMH levels.
