Noise Pollution is Secretly Killing Your Study Session: Here is The Science

Content: We often think that we can study anywhere, from a busy cafe to a living room with the TV on. However, recent findings suggest that your environment plays a massive role in how much information you actually retain.

A study conducted at Universitas Bhayangkara Jakarta Raya experimented with students to see how noise intensity affects memory. The participants were divided into two groups: one listening to relaxing music and the other exposed to noisy, high-tempo music while memorizing words.

The data is undeniable. The group in the relaxing environment scored significantly higher with an average of 19.2, while the group in the noisy environment dropped to 13.8. The study concluded that there is a significant difference in memory performance between quiet and noisy conditions.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), noise is any unwanted sound that negatively impacts health. When you study in a loud environment, your brain struggles to process information. Noise exposure above 85 dBA can directly affect cognitive functions, including reaction time, attention, and memory.

In contrast, soft rhythms or relaxing music can enter the brain and be processed to provide excellent health effects. It strengthens neural connections, making it easier to recall information later.

So, if you want to ace that test, silence the noise. Opt for a quiet room or calming tunes to ensure your hard work pays off.
