Mouth Taping While Sleeping : Make Your Sleep Well?

Hello #sahabatpramita. In recent years, social media trends have popularized "mouth taping"—the practice of placing adhesive tape over the lips before sleeping. Advocates claim this viral sleep hack prevents mouth breathing, enhances oxygen intake, and cures snoring or sleep apnea. However, is this home remedy clinically proven, or is it a dangerous myth?

According to a comprehensive systematic review evaluating multiple clinical studies, the claim that mouth taping universally improves sleep health and oxygenation is a MYTH.

The review revealed that only a small fraction of studies observed minor reductions in sleep apnea markers, such as the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI). Crucially, these limited benefits occurred exclusively in select individuals with mild sleep apnea who had completely clear nasal airways. In contrast, the majority of evaluated studies found no significant clinical benefits regarding overall sleep quality, oxygen saturation, or airway stability.

More importantly, medical researchers highlighted significant safety risks associated with indiscriminate mouth taping. Taping the mouth shut can be hazardous for individuals suffering from underlying nasal obstruction, severe rhinitis, or structural airway narrowing. If the nasal passages become congested overnight while the mouth is sealed shut, the risk of asphyxiation, severe oxygen desaturation, or choking increases markedly.

Therefore, mouth taping is not a universal or safe solution for sleep-disordered breathing. Anyone experiencing persistent snoring, morning fatigue, or disrupted sleep should avoid social media trends and consult medical professionals for proper diagnostic evaluations alongside #sahabatpramita.
