Influenza A: Understanding the Right Tests for Detection

Fever, cough, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue are common symptoms associated with influenza. However, similar complaints can also occur in many other respiratory infections. For this reason, symptoms alone may not be sufficient to confirm Influenza A.

One testing option is the Influenza A antigen test. This examination detects viral proteins or antigens in respiratory specimens collected through a nasal or throat swab. One of its advantages is the relatively rapid turnaround time.

However, a negative antigen result does not always completely rule out influenza infection. Antigen tests generally have lower sensitivity than molecular testing, so the result should be interpreted together with the patient's symptoms and clinical condition.

Another option is molecular testing, including RT-PCR. Molecular methods detect the genetic material of the virus. Certain respiratory panels can also identify Influenza A together with other respiratory viruses or pathogens. Specimens are commonly obtained through a nasopharyngeal swab taken from the back of the nose and throat.

What about blood tests?

Routine blood tests do not directly detect the Influenza A virus. Instead, they may help doctors assess the body's response to infection and evaluate possible complications or secondary infections. Changes in white blood cell or lymphocyte levels may be found in certain cases.

For patients experiencing more severe respiratory symptoms or when lung complications are suspected, additional examinations such as a chest X-ray may also be considered based on a doctor's clinical assessment.

Because each examination serves a different purpose, the appropriate test should be selected according to the symptoms, timing of illness, and the patient's clinical condition.

Rather than relying on symptoms alone, consult a doctor and undergo the examination that is appropriate for your condition.

Recognize the symptoms. Confirm them with the right test.
