Influenza A Is More Than a Common Cold: Know the Symptoms and Prevention

Coughing, a runny nose, and feeling slightly unwell are often considered minor symptoms that will simply disappear with time. However, Influenza A may cause symptoms that develop more suddenly and feel considerably more severe than those of a common cold.

Influenza A is a viral infection that affects the respiratory system. The virus can spread through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. This makes transmission relatively easy, particularly during close contact with someone who is infected.

One important difference between influenza and the common cold is the pattern and severity of symptoms. Influenza may cause a sudden high fever, muscle and joint pain, headache, weakness, dry cough, and significant fatigue. In some cases, the symptoms can interfere with normal daily activities and require adequate rest.

Although people of all ages can become infected, certain groups may face a greater risk of developing complications. These include children, older adults, pregnant women, people living with chronic medical conditions, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Influenza-related complications can affect the respiratory system. Pneumonia and shortness of breath are among the complications that require particular attention. Symptoms that become more severe or breathing difficulties should not be ignored and may require medical assessment.

Preventive measures can begin with simple everyday habits. Regular handwashing, practising proper cough and sneeze etiquette, wearing a mask when experiencing respiratory symptoms, getting sufficient rest, maintaining adequate fluid intake, and following influenza vaccination recommendations from healthcare professionals can help reduce the risk of transmission and complications.

Influenza should therefore not be regarded as merely an ordinary cough and cold. Recognising the symptoms early and adopting appropriate preventive measures can help protect both individuals and the people around them.
