Wed, 16 Nov 2022
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic or long-term disease that has serious complications and can cause death. Organs that can cause problems due to uncontrolled Diabetes Mellitus include: heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Based on RISKESDAS 2018, Diabetes Mellitus affects 20.4 million people in Indonesia.
Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus is an effort aimed at groups who have not yet suffered, but have the potential to suffer from Diabetes Mellitus.
Prevention efforts are mainly done through lifestyle changes. The lifestyle that can be applied to prevent diabetes mellitus is as follows:
1. Quit smoking

2. Regulating diet, including:
a. Reduce calorie intake
b. Limit your intake of sweet foods such as sweets, candy, chocolate, ice cream and fast food
c. Expand foods rich in fiber such as fruits and vegetables
d. Limit consumption of fat, choose foods that are low in fat content such as fish, lean meat, skinless chicken, and try to cook food by boiling or baking, not frying
e. Avoid alcoholic beverages and carbonated drinks.

3. Increase physical activity
Do exercise every day for at least 30 minutes according to your ability. Sports that can be done can be started from simple activities such as walking. Apart from preventing diabetes mellitus, exercise can also help maintain normal blood pressure and prevent increased cholesterol levels. In order to avoid hypoglycemia (blood sugar levels that drop too low) during exercise or after exercise, it is recommended to eat food about 1-2 hours before exercise.
4. Stress management
Stress that is not managed properly can increase the risk of developing diabetes mellitus. At times of stress, the body will release cortisol or what we know as the stress hormone which can increase blood sugar levels. In addition, in a state of stress, the body tends to get hungry more easily and is compelled to consume more food. Therefore, effective stress management is an important component in preventing diabetes mellitus.

5. Maintain ideal body weight
If you are overweight or obese, it is recommended to lose weight and maintain an ideal body weight.

6. Screen and check blood sugar regularly
Early detection of Diabetes Mellitus through blood sugar checks can be done by going directly to health services such as health centers, clinics or hospitals. Examination is carried out at least once a year in order to recognize diabetes mellitus at an early stage. Check your health regularly and contact your doctor for more information.
