What is Epilepsy?
Thu, 26 Dec 2024Hello Sahabat PRAMITA! Let’s discuss epilepsy, a neurological disorder often misunderstood. Epilepsy is not a mental illness or possession but a brain condition marked by recurrent seizures without fever.
Seizures are caused by excessive electrical activity in the brain and are categorized into:
Generalized Seizures – Affecting the entire brain, such as tonic-clonic, myoclonic, or absence seizures.
Focal Seizures – Occur in specific parts of the brain, with or without consciousness impairment.
WHO estimates that epilepsy affects 50 million people worldwide. With proper treatment, up to 70% of patients can live seizure-free. Causes include structural abnormalities, genetic factors, infections, metabolic issues, and severe brain injuries.
If you or someone you know has epilepsy, consult a doctor and consider EEG for accurate diagnosis. Remember, epilepsy is not contagious, so don’t hesitate to seek medical support.
