What is Meningitis?
Tue, 20 Feb 2024Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis is often preceded by respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, making it initially difficult to recognize.
Causes and Risks
Meningitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or certain conditions. Bacteria such as Meningococcus and Pneumococcus are common culprits. Risk factors include an unhealthy environment, contact with individuals with respiratory infections, weakened immunity, and age.
Symptoms of Meningitis
Symptoms can include fever, headache, weakness, seizures, and vomiting. In more severe cases, it can lead to decreased consciousness.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis involves the examination of cerebrospinal fluid (brain fluid) and brain imaging (CT Scan or MRI of the head).
Supportive treatment includes rest and hydration, along with addressing the underlying cause (depending on the cause). Viral meningitis may require antiviral medication, bacterial meningitis is treated with antibiotics, and fungal meningitis with antifungal drugs.
Prevention
Vaccination can help prevent meningitis in infants. Additionally, avoiding direct contact with infected individuals, practicing good hand hygiene, and not sharing personal items are recommended preventive measures.
When to See a Doctor?
Do not ignore symptoms. Consult a doctor promptly for appropriate treatment.
