Bruising after a blood draw happens when there is the blood vessels beneath the skin are torn, causing a small amount of blood to leak and fill the tissue beneath the skin's surface.

There are several factors that can increase the likelihood of bruising after a blood draw, including:

  1. Bending the elbow or carrying heavy items after drawing blood
  2. The patient's medical condition, including blood clotting disorders and chemotherapy patients

Here are some ways to deal with bruises:

  1. Compress the bruised area with ice cubes wrapped in a cloth or towel for 10-15 minutes, 3-4 times per day.
  2. Apply warm, moist compresses for 20 minutes to relieve pain 48 hours after blood collection.
  3. Use pain relievers (preferably paracetamol) to alleviate bruising pain.
  4. Avoid activities that are too strenuous on bruising-prone areas of the body.

If the bruises do not heal within two weeks, see a doctor right away..
