Vegan Diet: Can It Really Trigger Osteoporosis?

Sat, 4 Jan 2025

Hello, PRAMITA Friends, have you ever heard the term “osteoporosis”? This condition, often called brittle bone disease, occurs when bone density decreases, making bones more fragile and prone to fractures. Interestingly, osteoporosis risks can start at a young age, especially if our diet and lifestyle do not support bone health.

A study in New Zealand found that individuals following a vegan diet without proper planning tended to have low calcium intake. As we know, calcium is essential for maintaining bone density. However, the study also revealed that sufficient calcium intake, even without dairy products, can still support bone health when combined with other nutrients like protein, magnesium, and vitamin C from plant-based foods. For example, tofu and green vegetables are excellent alternative calcium sources.

According to the data, participants' average daily calcium intake was 917 mg/day, slightly above the recommended 840 mg/day for adults. However, there was significant variation among individuals, with some consuming as little as 195 mg/day, which is far from adequate. This highlights that an unplanned diet can increase the risk of bone issues, including osteoporosis.

So, what can be done? One wise step is to conduct early screenings to detect osteoporosis risk. Laboratory tests, such as Bone Mineral Density (BMD) measurements, can help determine current bone health. Additionally, testing calcium and vitamin D levels is crucial to preventing further risks.

Early screening is particularly important if there is a family history of osteoporosis or if your diet might lack balance. Identifying risks early allows preventive steps, such as healthier eating habits and regular exercise.

What are you waiting for? Start taking care of your bones today with simple steps: consume calcium-rich foods, get sunlight for vitamin D, and ensure regular lab tests. Healthy bones are a long-term investment for an active and injury-free life!
