THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING YOUR DENTAL & MOUTH HEALTH WHEN FASTING RAMADAN
Wed, 20 Apr 2022
For some people, dental and oral health is often the number one priority. Even though we know, teeth and mouth are the "gateway" for the entry of germs and bacteria that can interfere with the health of other body organs. Especially when fasting in the month of Ramadan where there is a change in eating patterns, it is very important to maintain dental and oral health, to avoid some dental and oral health problems, such as: toothache, dry mouth and bad breath which cause a person's self-confidence to decrease.
The following tips are to avoid dental and oral health problems:
a. Toothache, often the cause is the presence of cavities. During Ramadan, people often break their fast with drinks and sweet foods that contain lots of sugar, as the main source of cavities. Food residue and the presence of bacteria will produce acids that can dissolve tooth minerals and cause cavities. Actually, saliva can neutralize the acid produced by bacteria, but during fasting, saliva decreases so that the oral cavity is acidic and causes cavities.
b. Dry mouth, this is caused by reduced saliva production due to decreased fluid intake during fasting. The consumption of certain drugs during fasting can also cause dry mouth. Dry mouth is often uncomfortable, chapped lips, cavities, and bad breath.
c. Bad breath, apart from dry mouth, bad breath can also be caused by rotting food residue, causing an unpleasant odor. In addition, consuming strong-smelling foods (onions, coffee, petai and others) can also cause bad breath.
There are several ways to maintain dental and oral health during Ramadan fasting:
- Pay attention to the intake of types of food, avoid foods that contain sugar and sticky foods.
- Consume enough fruits and vegetables.
- Perform cleaning of plaque and food debris left by brushing your teeth 2 times a day after sahur and before going to bed, the technique and method should not damage the structure of the teeth and gums. If necessary, rinse with mouthwash that does not contain alcohol and consume enough water.
- Perform dental and oral care before the month of Ramadan comes, such as cleaning tartar, filling cavities, and other necessary treatments.
