The Dangers of Knee Joint Calcification

Tue, 10 Oct 2023

Joint calcification is commonly referred to as Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a bone disease resulting from the thinning of the cartilage that cushions the joint bones. The knee joint is a part of the body that is most often affected by osteoarthritis.

In adults, pain—especially knee and joint pain—often emerges as a bodily response due to a person conducting heavy activities daily and also due to aging. However, many people still neglect the pain that appears in some parts of their body, assuming that this pain will disappear over time! If left untreated, the potential pain or knee pain will negatively impact an individual and signal a threat of a more serious disease.

What causes knee pain? Common reasons why a person experiences pain include repeatedly doing heavy work, sitting too long, and aging. However, other causes of pain in joints, like the knee, can also result from several factors, ranging from injury, trauma, infection, inflammatory disease, obesity, and most often due to joint calcification or osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is often experienced by adults due to aging, characterized by pain and stiffness in the joints and sometimes accompanied by swelling. For example, it will be felt when changing body positions, standing after sitting for a quite long time, going up and down stairs, or straightening the knee after bending the leg or squatting. If left too long, this condition will undoubtedly be very dangerous for the body. This is a reason why someone should not underestimate knee pain, especially if they understand the function of the knee as a support for the human body.

Tips for dealing with knee pain: If you have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, lifestyle changes need to be made, for example, patients with excess weight (both overweight and obese) must be able to reduce their weight, avoid going up and down stairs, and choose the right way to exercise. The right exercise is an exercise that avoids excessive thrust, such as stationary cycling and swimming.

The doctor will start giving medications to deal with the pain you are experiencing, which can be given orally or by intra-articular injection. In addition, physical therapy or rehabilitation must immediately be started with the aim of maintaining active joint movement, maintaining muscle strength and can reduce pain in joints with local warming. If various efforts have been made but you still feel pain and even joint deformity occurs, surgery needs to be done. The surgical action that can be performed can be in the form of joint replacement or what we know as a total knee replacement.

And most importantly, immediately consult your health with a doctor to prevent the occurrence of joint calcification that can happen more quickly, one reason is because knee pain is left too long.
