Supporting Tests for Leukemia

Can leukemia be cured?
The success of leukemia treatment depends on the type of leukemia and its risk stratification. Patients with high-risk leukemia have a poorer prognosis. In Indonesia, the survival rate of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is reported to be 70 – 80%. However, it should be noted that there is always a risk of relapse, which is the return of signs and symptoms of the disease after achieving remission (recovery).

Management
In general, the modalities of leukemia therapy include chemotherapy, supportive care, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Supportive Examinations for Leukemia
The supportive examinations conducted for leukemia are:
•  Complete blood count (anemia, thrombocytopenia/thrombocytosis, leukopenia/leukocytosis.
•  Peripheral blood smear: blast cells (in ALL & AML) and Auer rods (AML)
•  Liver function: SGOT, SGPT
•  Blood coagulation function
•  Bone marrow aspiration or biopsy
•  Lumbar puncture
•  Infection focus screening: chest X-ray, blood culture, urinalysis, urine culture
•  DIC panel
•  Immunophenotyping
•  Cytogenetic examination

The key is early diagnosis through examination by a doctor, laboratory, and appropriate treatment can provide a good prognosis.
Remember, always consult your child's complaints to the nearest Pramita branch doctor.
