Pre-Vaccination Screening for Hepatitis B
Mon, 22 Jul 2024Hepatitis B is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis B virus (HBV). To prevent this disease, Hepatitis B vaccination is highly recommended. However, before getting vaccinated, certain tests need to be conducted to ensure that the vaccine will be effective and safe.
Anti-HBc Test as the Window Period of Hepatitis B
The anti-HBc test is used to detect the presence of antibodies against the HBV core antigen. In the acute phase of Hepatitis B, the period between the disappearance of HBsAg and the appearance of anti-HBs is known as the window period. During this period, the only positive marker is IgM anti-HBc.
Importance of HBsAg Before Vaccination
HBsAg is a Hepatitis B surface antigen that indicates whether a person is currently infected with HBV. If the HBsAg test result is positive, vaccination is usually postponed because the individual is currently infected.
Role of Anti-HBs in Vaccination
Anti-HBs are antibodies formed as an immune response to HBV, either from a previous infection or from vaccination. The expected level of anti-HBs after vaccination is 100 mIU/mL. If the anti-HBs level is below 10 mIU/mL, it is recommended to receive a complete Hepatitis B vaccination series.
When to Perform These Tests?
Anti-HBc, HBsAg, and anti-HBs tests should be conducted before starting the Hepatitis B vaccination series, especially for individuals at high risk of HBV
infection, such as medical workers, intravenous drug users, and HIV patients.
Conclusion
Anti-HBc, HBsAg, and anti-HBs tests are crucial steps before Hepatitis B vaccination. These tests help determine the HBV infection status and ensure that the vaccination given is appropriate and safe.
