Osteoporosis Screening Panel
Thu, 17 Oct 2024The osteoporosis screening panel includes several tests and examinations to evaluate bone health and detect the risk of osteoporosis. Here are some tests commonly performed in the osteoporosis screening panel:
Total Serum Calcium, Albumin, and Phosphorus
This test is part of the CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) to detect conditions related to hypercalcemia, such as primary hyperparathyroidism, or hypocalcemia, which can lead to bone loss.
Serum Creatinine and Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)
This test is also part of the CMP and is used to detect kidney failure that can affect bone health.
Highly Sensitive Estradiol
Low levels of estradiol are known to be associated with bone loss.
Vitamin D
Testing for vitamin D is very important as it helps determine vitamin D levels in the body, allowing us to prevent bone loss. Most cases of osteoporosis occur in women with suboptimal vitamin D nutrition.
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)
Thyroid hormones influence the rate of bone turnover and play a crucial role in maintaining bone health. Excess thyroid hormone in the body can accelerate bone loss, increasing the risk of osteoporosis.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
The ALP test is part of the CMP and is useful for detecting conditions such as metastatic bone disease, osteomalacia, and others. Total ALP is adequate to indicate significant increases in bone formation, but it is not sensitive enough to detect changes in bone remodeling seen in most uncomplicated cases of osteoporosis.
