Myth / Fact: Pregnant Women Should Avoid Cats
Tue, 17 Nov 2020
Many of us often advise pregnant women not to pet or approach cats during pregnancy. Because it can give disease, harm the health of the baby in the womb and even miscarry. Myth / Fact?
Responding to this assumption, Gynecologist and Obstetrics Specialist of Bung Karno Hospital Solo, dr. Andy Wijayanto, M.Kes, called this a myth, in fact there is no problem if a pregnant woman is around cats or even raising cats. On the contrary, having a pet like a cat can be helpful for relieving stress and psychological disorders. It's just that pregnant women shall be more aware of cat faeces, this is caused by cat faeces which may containToxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) which can cause toxoplasmosis.
Thus, you don't need to worry and get rid of your cat during pregnancy. What needs to be done is to be more careful not to come into contact with your cat's litter or litter box. Ask your partner or household assistant to clean cat litter, and you can still take care of your cat.
If necessary, because you are worried that you will contract toxoplasmosis, pregnant women are advised to immediately do a blood test like TORCH examination to confirm if you are infected.
In addition, TORCH examination can help pregnant women find out whether they already have immunity to toxoplasmosis or not.
