Managing Kids Fasting Break Requests

Mon, 11 Mar 2024

Hello, Moms and Dads! Have you ever experienced your child constantly complaining about hunger and thirst during fasting? Don't worry, it's perfectly normal! Children are still learning to fast.

As parents, we can provide understanding and encouragement to our little ones so they can fast strongly until it's time to break their fast. Especially if it's their first time fasting, they definitely need extra attention. Here are some fun tips to handle children who tend to complain during fasting. Let's check them out!

How to Handle Children Complaining During Fasting:

Explain Ramadan: Explain to your child about the month of Ramadan, why we fast, its history, and its benefits. Even better, teach them before the fasting month arrives, so they already know what to expect.

Create an Activity Plan: Make a list of fun activities that you can do with your little one until it's time to break the fast. For example, watching movies, playing games, or having a good chat. This way, the child won't constantly think about food.

Distract Attention: Try to divert your child's attention from hunger and thirst. Invite them to take a nap, play, or worship together. Taking a nap can also keep the body fit, you know!

Cook Together: When it's time to break the fast, invite your little one to cook their favorite menu. Fun, right? It can make the child excited until it's time to break the fast.

Successful Tips for Teaching Children to Fast:

According to child psychologist Dr. Dewi Retno Suminar, we can teach children to fast from an early age. For those under 7 years old, they can imitate their parents' behavior. For example, during sahur, let them join in and see why it's necessary to have sahur.

If the child is over 7 years old, we can give rewards or praise when they successfully fast for a whole month. It can motivate them! So, while fasting, we can also teach children about empathy, appreciation, and gratitude.

Don't forget, make sure the child stays healthy and eats nutritious food during fasting. Let's be enthusiastic about teaching children to fast! I hope these tips help!
