Laboratory tests for Metabolic Syndrome

Laboratory tests for Metabolic Syndrome (SM) depend on the diagnostic criteria used. A person is said to have metabolic syndrome, if he has at least one
3 of the following 5 criteria:

1. Large waist circumference, which is more than 90 cm in men and more than 80 cm in women
2. High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol levels are less than 50 mg / dl
3. Triglyceride levels in the blood more than 150 mg / dl
4. Consistent blood pressure of 140/90 or more
5. Fasting blood sugar levels of 100 mg / dl or higher

Therefore, laboratory tests are very important to diagnose Metabolic Syndrome.
Some laboratory tests to diagnose Metabolic Syndrome:

A. Fasting blood sugar

Before checking fasting blood sugar, patients are advised to fast for 10 hours. According to the IDF, NCEP-ATP III and AHA: Fasting Blood Sugar> 100 mg / dl is included in one of the diagnostic criteria for Metabolic Syndrome. (Normal fasting blood sugar levels are between 70-125 mg / dl).

B. Lipid Profile

Before carrying out the Lipid Profile examination, the patient must fast for 10 hours.
1. HDL
Reference value: 40-60 mg / dl
2. Triglycerides
Reference value: <150 mg / dl

C. HbA1C

This examination, to determine the Glucose Profile for the last 3 months. There is no special preparation for checking HbA1C, no need for fasting. Reference value <6%.

D. Plasma Insulin

Before the examination, the patient was fasted for 10 hours. The purpose of this examination is to determine the levels of insulin produced by pancreatic β cells. Reference value: 2.6-24.5 μIU / ml
