Iron, Is it Important?
Tue, 14 Mar 2023Iron is a mineral that babies and children require for proper development and health.
Hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells, transports oxygen to all cells in the body. Our bodies require iron to produce hemoglobin.
Iron is required for normal brain development in babies and children. Babies who do not get enough iron ("iron deficiency") may be less active and develop at a slower rate.
How much iron do kids require?
When babies begin eating solid foods, the amount of iron they require is determined by their age. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is the daily amount of nutrients that a person requires to stay healthy.
Amount of iron consumed per day based on age (RDA)
7 to 12 months 11 mg
1 to 3 years 7 mg
4 to 8 years 10 mg
9 to 13 years 8 mg
14 to 18 years 11 mg (for boys) 15 mg (for girls)
Should I give iron supplements to my child?
Full-term infants who are breastfed or receive iron-fortified infant formula from birth do not require an iron supplement.
Low Birth weight Babies, especially those with specific anemia symptoms, require iron supplementation. The type of supplement, the amount, and the duration are determined by their birth weight and diet. Consult your doctor about the appropriate amount for your baby.
