Getting to Know Cholesterol and Uric Acid Tests

Wed, 3 Apr 2024

Cholesterol testing, also known as a lipid profile, is a procedure to measure the levels of fats in the blood. It's important to monitor and be aware of the risk of fatty plaque buildup in artery blood vessels, a cause of various cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension to stroke. This test includes the measurement of four types of fats: Total Cholesterol, LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein), HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein), and Triglycerides.

This test is recommended for:

  • Individuals with a family history of high cholesterol or heart attacks.
  • Individuals who are overweight (obese).
  • Individuals with an unhealthy lifestyle, such as consuming high-fat foods, smoking, drinking alcohol, and rarely exercising.
  • Individuals with a history of diabetes and hypertension.

Cholesterol Test:

  • LDL: Measures LDL cholesterol, which can cause the buildup of fatty plaques in artery blood vessels.
  • HDL: Determines the level of HDL cholesterol, which helps remove LDL and prevent the buildup of fatty plaques.
  • Total Cholesterol: Determines the overall cholesterol level, with an ideal value not exceeding 200 mg/dL.
  • Triglycerides: Measures triglyceride levels, with normal results not exceeding 150 mg/dL.

Uric Acid Test:

The uric acid test detects uric acid levels through a blood or urine sample, aiding in the diagnosis and control of uric acid-related diseases, such as gout arthritis or kidney stones.

When Should You Check Uric Acid?

Uric acid tests can be done at any time as a routine check-up. It is recommended for individuals with symptoms such as stiff joints, persistent pain, swelling and redness in the joints, difficulty walking, or a burning sensation in the joints.

Preparation for Uric Acid Test:

Fasting before the test. Samples can be taken through blood or urine. For urine tests, a container is usually provided to collect urine for 24 hours.

Normal Uric Acid Values:

Normal uric acid levels are 2.5–6.0 mg/dL for women and 2.5–7.2 mg/dL for men.
