Examination for Allergies
Wed, 31 Jan 2024TYPES OF ALLERGY TESTS
As of now, allergies cannot be cured; they can only be controlled to reduce recurrences. To determine the allergens that trigger allergic symptoms, various tests are available:
Medical History Assessment
Discussing your medical history and symptoms with a healthcare provider.
Physical Examination
A physical examination by a healthcare professional to identify signs of allergies.
Laboratory Support Tests
Several laboratory tests can help detect allergens that trigger allergic reactions.
Laboratory tests include:
a. Skin Tests
- Skin tests are easy, fast, and representative for detecting potential allergens from foods or contact. There are four types:
- Skin Prick Test
- Intradermal Test
- Skin Scratch Test
- Patch Test
b. Blood Tests
- Blood tests can measure specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels to determine allergen-specific reactions. These tests can assess up to 96 or 220 allergens, including food and inhalation allergens.
c. Provocation Tests
- Provocation tests are only performed in a hospital setting due to the potential for severe allergic reactions.
In conclusion, while allergies cannot be cured, they can be managed through appropriate testing and medical guidance.
