DISEASES THAT ARE VULNERABLE TO HAPPEN WHEN FASTING
Wed, 20 Apr 2022
Ramadan has arrived, a sign that Muslims are obliged to fast for a whole month.
For Muslims, fasting is a form of piety to Allah SWT, besides that there are many benefits that can be obtained, such as lowering blood sugar, normalizing blood pressure, and increasing endurance.
But on the other hand, dietary changes from fasting sometimes also make the body more susceptible to disease.
Pain during fasting is actually a natural body response to changes in diet and daily habits. In addition, choosing the wrong food during sahur and iftar can also trigger various diseases during fasting.
Some diseases that can arise during fasting, such as:
1. Headache
The main triggers are dehydration and hunger. This will block the supply of blood and glucose to the brain. The brain that lacks energy will trigger a pain response. In some people, hunger and dehydration can even trigger migraine recurrences.
2. Stomach Acid Rise (ulcer)
The recurrence of ulcers is also one of the diseases that often appear during fasting. Every day, the stomach produces hydrochloric acid to break down the food we eat. Even when there is no food to digest, the stomach will continue to produce acidic fluids so that in the end it continues to accumulate. As a result, gastric acid can flow back into the esophagus and cause symptoms of ulcers and heartburn.
3. Sore Throat
Possible causes are bacterial infections or due to allergic reactions to the surrounding environment, especially dust and smoke from vehicle pollution. When fasting, the throat is prone to dryness because we do not drink water for a long time, thus making foreign substances more easily irritate the throat.
4. Diarrhea
Eating spicy food at dawn or breaking the fast is the main cause of diarrhea. A number of other triggers can cause this, including drinking liquids that are high in caffeine, such as tea or coffee, at suhoor or iftar.
From this description, it is necessary to take steps to maintain health during fasting, such as:
• Eat healthy and nutritionally balanced meals at suhoor and iftar
• Sufficient drinking needs in a day
• Exercise in moderation
• Quit smoking
