Coughs and Colds: A Mom's Alert
Mon, 4 Mar 2024Colds are a common issue that often affects infants. Although colds in babies typically resolve on their own, there are moments when we need to be more vigilant. Some cold symptoms in babies can be signs of serious illnesses.
Babies do not yet have as strong an immune system as adults, making them more susceptible to diseases, including colds. In fact, babies can experience up to seven colds during the first 0-12 months of their lives.
So, even though baby colds often heal on their own, do not underestimate them. There are several symptoms that need attention, especially if the little one exhibits these symptoms:
High fever
Difficulty breathing
Noisy or wheezing breaths
Cough lasting more than 2 days, especially with lots of phlegm or blood
Seizures
Unusual urination or bowel movements
Excessive vomiting
Pale skin or bluish lips and nails
Tendency to refuse food or cry while breastfeeding
Sneezing, runny nose, and red eyes
More fussiness and sleepiness than usual
Ear pain or frequent pulling/rubbing of ears
If your little one shows some of these symptoms please consult a doctor promptly. Colds in infants accompanied by these symptoms could indicate serious conditions such as pneumonia.
To alleviate a baby's cold make sure they get enough rest; elevate their head for easier breathing; provide breast milk or formula regularly to prevent dehydration; avoid cigarette smoke or dust exposure. Also keeping the little one away from people with flu is a good preventive measure.
Don't forget to keep up with your baby's immunization schedule; this is a crucial step in maintaining their health.
Wishing your little one stays healthy and cheerful!
