Changes that occur in the skin during pregnancy
Fri, 17 Dec 2021
Pregnancy is not just a change in the stomach that is getting bigger. As pregnancy progresses, there are various things that also happen to the skin. One of the causes of changes in the skin during pregnancy is due to hormonal changes during pregnancy such as the hormones estrogen and progesterone. What are the changes in the skin during pregnancy?
1. Glowing Skin
During the second trimester, the increased blood flow will bring more to the surface of the skin, making the mother look dewy and radiant.
2. Stretch Marks
Stretch marks appear because during pregnancy, the skin stretches faster and is wider than usual.
3. Freckles and Melasma
Estrogen stimulates increased pigment production which causes darker freckles, worsening of freckles, and even darker moles.
4. Acne
Hormones in the body can cause the oil glands to secrete more oil, causing acne.
5. Facial Swelling
Swelling of the hands and feet is quite normal during pregnancy. The face will also look rounder and fatter. If the swollen face is painful and abnormal, it could be a sign of preeclampsia. You should immediately discuss with your obstetrician.
These are the changes that can occur during pregnancy. Maybe some changes will make you uncomfortable. But take it easy, these changes will disappear after giving birth. The most important thing is that you don't stress, so that the health of the fetus can be maintained.
