BEWARE OF ANEMIA
Wed, 6 Jan 2021
Red blood deficiency or anemia is a condition when the body lacks healthy red blood cells or when the red blood cells don't function properly.
Causes of Anemia
Insufficient production of red blood cells, excessive blood loss, too rapid destruction of red blood cells.
The following are the types of anemia based on the cause:
- Anemia due to iron (Fe) deficiency
- Anemia during pregnancy
- Anemia due to bleeding
- aplastic anemia
- Hemolytic anemia
- Anemia due to chronic disease
- Sickle cell anemia and Thalassemia.
Symptoms of Anemia
Tiredness and fatigue, headaches and dizziness, skin looks pale or yellowish, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain, cold in the hands and feet and can cause death if not treated properly.
Anemia Prevention
Anemia is generally caused by iron deficiency and can be prevented by eating a diet rich in nutrients, especially:
• foods rich in iron and folic acid, such as meats, cereals, nuts, dark green leafy vegetables, breads and fruits
• Foods rich in vitamin B12, such as milk and its derivatives, as well as soy-based foods, such as tempeh and tofu.
• Fruits rich in vitamin C, such as beets, oranges, melons, tomatoes and strawberries.
Avoid consumption of coffee, tea and calcium which can inhibit iron absorption. If there is concern that the food consumed does not contain enough vitamins, it is advisable to take a multivitamin. If the complaint persists, contact your doctor immediately.
