DIAGNOSIS
Until now, the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is still based on the results of clinical evaluation. There are no laboratory tests that support the diagnosis of people with autism spectrum disorders.
History
Still rely heavily on information from parents with ASD, especially including: speaking skills, social interaction, and playing skills.
It is necessary to explore from their parents the risk factors that may exist associated with ASD.
Aloanamnesis in children aged 18-24 months, usually begins to show symptoms at this age, there are limitations in showing normal patterns of social communication.
In ASD children, they are unable to show interest, share attention, follow the eyes of the interlocutor.
Limitations of social interaction such as: rarely respond when called, limited facial expressions, rarely interested in the environment and others.
Supporting investigation:
Routine investigations are not recommended as part of the diagnostic evaluation of a patient with suspected ASD.
Radiological examination, blood biomarkers, and urine tests are not recommended to be done routinely in supporting the diagnosis of ASD.
Laboratory Tests and Support
Laboratory tests for ASD can be used to determine whether a physical problem is causing the symptoms of autism in a child:
Genetic Examination
Chromosomal analysis if the child is suspected of having a dysmorphic appearance, congenital abnormalities, intellectual limitations at the time of history and physical examination.
Check the level of Lead in the blood
Because lead can cause damage to the brain and other body parts.
Electroencephalography (EEG) examination, for patients with a history of epilepsy.
Screening for ASD
For ASD screening, the Modified-Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) is used, which is valid in tracing and recognizing the symptoms of autism in children aged 18-24 months.
PATIENT PREPARATION AND EXAMINATION MATERIALS
Special EEG examination make an appointment in advance.
Other examination materials used are blood from veins.
