Anemia, Is It Allowed to Fasting in Ramadan?

Sun, 17 Mar 2024

Anemia, or iron deficiency, is a condition where the body lacks healthy red blood cells, resulting in organs not receiving enough oxygen. This makes individuals feel tired and pale. Anemia can be temporary or chronic, with varying severity levels. In adults, anemia is considered to occur when hemoglobin (Hb) levels are less than 14 grams per deciliter for men and less than 12 grams per deciliter for women. Severe anemia occurs when Hb levels fall below 8 grams per deciliter.

Causes of anemia vary from iron deficiency, bleeding, to bone marrow disorders. Symptoms of anemia include fatigue, dizziness, paleness of skin, irregular heartbeat, and shortness of breath.

Laboratory tests for anemia usually involve complete blood count analysis, measurement of iron levels, vitamin B12, and folic acid as well as kidney function.

For individuals with anemia who wish to fast during religious observances such as Ramadan fasting:

Nutritious Diet: Ensure that suhoor and iftar meals are rich in iron content along with vitamin C and other essential nutrients.

Importance of Suhoor: Do not skip suhoor; choose fiber-rich foods with protein to provide sustained energy.

Timely Iftar: Avoid delaying iftar to prevent extreme drops in blood sugar levels.

Increase Iron Intake: Consume foods like red meat, green vegetables, and legumes high in iron content.

Avoid Caffeine and Soda: These beverages can interfere with iron absorption.

Supplements: If necessary, take iron supplements and vitamins as prescribed by a doctor.

Adequate Rest: Ensure sufficient sleep to maintain bodily strength during fasting periods

It's important to monitor one’s health condition while fasting and promptly consult a doctor if symptoms worsen.
