After Eid al-Fitr, Beware of Lurking Diseases

Tue, 2 Apr 2024

The Eid moment is usually synonymous with coconut milk-based dishes, such as chicken opor, rendang, sambal goreng (spicy fried) potato chicken liver, and others. Not to mention the various choices of cakes and sweet drinks available to accompany the warm moments of gathering with relatives. The typical Eid al-Fitr dishes are indeed hard to resist. However, don't "lose yourself" by overeating. Appetizing food will increase your appetite, which is why many people complain about various diseases after Eid.

Here are some common diseases or complaints that often arise after Eid:

1. Flu and Cough
The drinks served during Eid are usually sweet and cold (with added ice). Although refreshing, these drinks can cause flu and cough if consumed excessively.

2. Gastric Pain
Gastric pain can occur due to excessive consumption of fatty or spicy foods and eating in large portions. Not only upper stomach pain, but gastric pain can also cause various other complaints, ranging from nausea, vomiting, to frequent belching.

3. Gout
In addition to salty and coconut milk-based foods, the Eid moment is also synonymous with sweet foods and high-protein foods. Consuming high-sugar foods and drinks during Eid can trigger a recurrence of gout. For those who have long suffered from gout, consuming high-purine foods, such as red meat, sardines, or shrimp, can even cause a gout attack.

4. Cholesterol
Someone with a history of high cholesterol should always pay attention to the type and portion of food consumed, including when celebrating Eid. This is because consuming too much fried food, fast food, and offal during Eid can increase cholesterol levels. If left untreated, high cholesterol levels can cause blockages in blood vessels and even risk serious complications, such as heart attacks.

5. Diabetes
If you have diabetes, it is mandatory to choose and limit the food consumed to keep blood sugar levels under control, including during the Eid moment. We certainly know that most of the food and drink menus served during Eid are included in the diabetes prohibition. Therefore, to keep blood sugar levels stable during Eid, make sure to limit the consumption of sweet foods or drinks and always take blood sugar-lowering medication prescribed by the doctor.
